Security cameras for all its useful purposes do have certain limitations too. Though a security camera is a sure fire preventive measure to prevent crimes from taking place in its vicinity, what happens if the perpetrators move away from the range of the security cameras and commit a crime? Can the presence of a security camera simply enough to change the mental outlook of die hard criminals? The answer is no. statistics have clearly indicated that while the positioning of security cameras in certain places have decreases the crime rate in that particular area, the overall figures of criminal incidents do not show any remarkable changes.
I for one, go for the school of thought that no matter what the financial implications of installing hi tech security systems are, we should go for it, as the value of human lives is much more greater than the financial cost. The terrorists of today, no matter which part of the world they come from or to what belief systems they adhere to have contributed to the sense of security we have today. There is no telling when the next bomb is going to explode or where it is going to explode. So security cameras and video surveillance have made life a little easy for us all but at what cost?
Where is our sense of privacy or the rights to a private life? We seem to have an excess of these security cameras. Whether we are hanging out at the mall or chilling out at a disco, there is no place where you can go to escape being constantly watched. It really freaks me out to think, what I’ll do when the time comes when they install security cameras even in public toilets! Will it be like a futuristic science fiction movie when humans cease to be living souls and end us as mere numbers and the world an enormous prison? Where every actions/movements are watched, recorded and played back to check for flaws in the way we live our lives? Only time will tell!
